UW-Milwaukee Professor Charged With Sexual Assault

-

A biomedical sciences professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has been  charged with multiple accounts of sexually assaulting a student, beginning in March 2018.

According to report by USA Today, Anthony A. Azenabor, 58, a professor with expertise in infectious diseases and immunity, appeared in court last weekend and was charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault, use of force and one count of fourth-degree sexual assault.

The court ordered Azenabor to surrender his passport and set his bail bond at $7,500.

According to the complaint filed by a student Azenabor advised in a Ph.D. program, Azenabor sexually harassed and assaulted her throughout the spring of 2018 within his office and a research lab. During the course of the investigation by the university police, another victim who was previously Azenabor’s student was identified as well.

In a statement to NBC15’s partner station, WITI, university officials said they are evaluating Azenabor’s employment status and that campus police will continue to work closely with the district attorney’s office.

“The university administration is evaluating his continued employment. Prof. Azenabor is currently not assigned to teach any classes and does not have contact with any students,” the university statement reads.

“UWM is committed to maintaining a safe environment for all of our students, and we always encourage students who believe they have been victimized to come forward and speak to police. Their courage allows us to take action.”
