Maine-based College of the Atlantic is the nation’s most environmentally responsible college, according to The Princeton Review.

Located in Bar Harbor, the college was ranked top for its environmentally responsible policies, offering a healthy and sustainable quality of life on campus to students and well preparing its students for employment in an increasingly green economy.

The Princeton Review’s list of Top Green Colleges was determined based on data from an institutional survey of college administrators and student surveys. A total of 50 colleges were ranked for the list.

The State University of New York – College of Environmental Science and Forestry ranked second for its commitment to building a sustainable future through research and degree programs in the environmental sciences, engineering, design and management fields.

Pennsylvania-based Dickinson College ranked third for its serious focus on global engagement and has a support system and “infinite amount of resources and facilities” on offer. The campus is also a good place for student activist with “most people on campus are very attuned to issues of class, race, sexual orientation, gender, and many other identities.

According to the Princeton Review, college applicants and their parents are increasingly concerned about sustainability issues. Among the 11,900 teens and parents surveyed earlier this year, 64 percent said that having information about a college’s commitment to the environment would influence their decision to apply to or attend the school.

Prominent institutions like Stanford University, Virginia Tech, UC Berkeley and Michigan State University also figured among the top 20 of the list.
