Western Governors University has announced a new scholarship program for members of the North Carolina military community.
Available to currently serving military members, veterans, and their families, in collaboration with the non-profit USO of North Carolina, the university will provide eight $2,500 scholarships to study any of its 60 bachelor’s and master’s degrees offered in business, IT, education, and healthcare.
The scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to individuals with top academic records, a readiness to study online among a variety of other consideration factors.
“As a military spouse, I know firsthand the sacrifices that servicemen and women make every day,” chancellor Catherine Truitt said. “It’s our hope that the Military Service Scholarships will honor their dedication and provide a means for eight deserving North Carolinians in the military community to advance their education and achieve their professional goals.”
The application for the program is currently open. Applications will be accepted through May 31, 2018.
Last year, the university awarded $750,000 in scholarships for veterans, active-duty military, reservists, and military family members to honor their service to the nation.
A recent study has shown that most military veterans enrolling in medical schools have to pay a major portion of their tuition costs out of pocket since the tuition aid provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) only covers a small portion of it.
