HBCU Virginia Union University is collaborating with a non-profit and a business group to make college accessible for black and Latino students, the school said in a release.
Last week, the university the Virginia Hispanic Foundation (VHF) and the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (VAHCC) signed a resolution to promote education for students from socially and economically disadvantaged groups.
For the next five years, all the organizations will work on creating and developing educational opportunities, economic programs, cross-cultural understanding, diversity inclusion initiatives, and cultural engagement advocacy for the Hispanic and African American communities.
“This historic resolution between these two esteemed institutions serves to create unprecedented educational and other opportunities for Virginia’s Black and Hispanic students, and builds on the rich accomplishments and legacies of both institutions,” said university President Dr. Hakim Lucas.
A recent report by The Education Trust found that Latinos continue to stay underrepresented in 40 of the 44 states, and especially at the community and technical colleges, while at the four-year public institutions in 33 states, their representation is not on par with the state’s proportion of Latino residents.
