The University of Kansas has received a gift of $4.2 million to create a scholarship fund to help nursing students receive an affordable education.

Margaret Ann Zimmerman, a retired nurse who died in Silver Spring, Maryland in 2017, left part of her estate to the KU School of Nursing to provide scholarships to postdoctoral and full-time doctoral students.

The fund will also assist in recruiting students for the undergraduate nursing honors program and the Nursing Pathways diversity program.

School officials believe that the fund will help attract a talented pool of students for its doctoral programs.

“We are grateful to Margaret Zimmerman for her foresight and her support of the nursing profession,” Sally Maliski, dean of the KU School of Nursing, said. “These programs prepare future nursing faculty and nurse researchers to serve the state and the nation.”

Zimmerman received a certificate in nursing from the KU Medical Center in 1947 and later went on to receive a public health nursing degree from the University of Minnesota. She retired as a child health nursing supervisor at the Montgomery County Health Department in Maryland.
