St. Lawrence University is creating two new endowed professorships in public health and STEM after receiving an external gift of $15 million.
Donated by an anonymous alumnus, the school will spend the majority of the gift on various initiatives to be announced in coming months and $5 million on creating the two endowed professorships. Before the start of the next academic year, two current tenured faculty members will be named as chair holders.
“This break-through and breathtaking gift is a vote of confidence in our innovative approach to the rapidly-growing global field of public health,” St. Lawrence University president, William L. Fox, said.
The gift supports the university’s Campaign for Every Laurentian, a fundraising initiative that currently consists of $148 million in gifts and commitments
“We are grateful for the generosity of the donor, the belief in our planning and vision, and the commitment that has been made to secure a strong future for public health,” Mindy Pitre, an associate professor of anthropology and co-coordinator of the public health program, said.
“This gift provides significant support for faculty who are teaching students how to tackle complex local, national, and global issues that will advance health and well-being in a changing world.”
The new positions aim to secure a vibrant public health program by bringing some of the the best possible scholars, researchers, and innovators to St. Lawrence.
