The University of Memphis Athletics Department has received one of the largest commitments in its history to support student-athletes, a school announced in a release.

Gary W. Bryant, who was earlier the President and CEO at several life and health insurance companies, along with his wife Barbara Bryant pledged a $13 million gift through their estate. Overall, it is the second-largest gift in the school’s history.

The gift will create the Gary and Barbara Bryant Athletic Excellence Fund that will enable future students to receive education and help them play their favorite sports.

“This remarkable gift also showcases the Bryants’ philanthropic spirit, as we collaborated with another conference institution that is also a recipient of a portion of their trusts,” said Dr. Adam Walker, Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director.

“That is a rare occurrence, especially given the size of the commitment. The Bryant Family gift is extraordinary, and will leave an indelible mark on Memphis Athletics.”

The Athletics Department can use the funds on various initiatives at its own discretion.

“Barbara and I have been pretty athletic throughout our years, and we both believe strongly in obtaining a quality education to open more doors and opportunities,” Gary Bryant said.

Bryant, an alumnus of the university passed with honors, received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1972 and later served many years in public accounting.
