Lake Superior State University (LSSU) in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, continues to open doors for college students interested in pursuing a degree in cannabis studies by offering a cannabis chemistry scholarship.

The university has announced that Steadfast Labs, a Michigan-based cannabis research and testing facility, is set to fund a $1,200 yearly scholarship for qualified students in the program.

“We’re committed to encouraging and supporting the best scientific talent. We believe that education is the key to raising the level of safety and integrity in the industry — education of the consumer and education within the industry,” said Avram Zallen, the founder and CEO of Steadfast Labs.

LSSU will offer scholarships to sophomores and upperclassmen with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students who live in the company’s service areas of Wayne and Oakland counties will be preferred.

Cannabis Studies

LSSU has been at the forefront of cannabis initiatives in higher education. In 2019, the university became the first in the nation to offer a cannabis chemistry program with degrees in cannabis science, cannabis production, and cannabis business.

The new program focuses on “the quantitative analysis of cannabis-related compounds and contaminants, including THC, CBD, and terpenes,” CBS News reported. The students even use real cannabis buds instead of alternatives while following strict legal requirements in Michigan for the use of regulated materials.

LSSU predicts that the cannabis industry will create more than 500,000 jobs by the end of 2022.
