The Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine at Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research has received a $10 million gift to provide support to its enrolled students.

The gift was made by the Thomas and Jeanne Elmezzi Private Foundation, which supported the school with a $15 million donation in 2007 as well. The latest gift will provide salary stipends to students and help attract and recruit renowned talent to the school.

The school, which is part of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, offers a Ph.D. program for physicians interested in pursuing a biomedical research career. It provides academic training to physicians who are committed to identifying the causes of human diseases and translating that research into diagnostic and therapeutic solutions.

“For centuries, young physicians faced frustration when unable to help a suffering patient,” Kevin J. Tracey, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institute, said. “The Elmezzi Foundation’s generous gift provides an essential path enabling young physicians to turn to science and discover desperately needed missing cures.”

35 students have graduated from the school to date. Additionally, graduates have received 23 U.S. utility patents and 13 grants from the National Institutes of Health.

“We are proud of the accomplishments of the Elmezzi Graduate School alumni all of whom are making significant contributions to a better understanding of human disease,” Jose Rivero, chairman and president of the Elmezzi Foundation, said.

“The additional endowment gift will allow the school to become a global magnet for training promising doctors in translational medicine and we are excited about the potential for generational impact,” Rivero added.
