Low-income undergraduate students at Rice University will be eligible for grant aid to cover their full tuition costs starting in 2019 as the school moves to increase its attendance fees.

On Tuesday, the university announced that it will provide students with family incomes below $65,000 grant aid covering their full tuition, mandatory fees, room, and boarding. With this move, the university aims to reduce the burden of student debt.

Students with family incomes between $65,000 and $130,000 will be eligible to receive full tuition grants, while students with family incomes between $130,000 and $200,000 will receive grants covering at least half of their tuition.

“Rice is committed to supporting its current and future students and making sure that, regardless of their financial status, they have access to the best in private higher education,” Rice president David Leebron said in a statement.

On the other hand, for students whose family incomes do not fall within those brackets, overall tuition costs will rise for the 2019-2020 academic year. The university has increased its cost of attendance by 3.1 percent, now totaling $63,252 per year.
