College aspirants, take note! Roger Williams University (RWU) in Rhode Island is partnering with nonprofit Breakthrough Providence to launch a college preparatory academy for high schoolers in Providence, RI.

The Breakthrough Providence-College Bound Program at RWU will help low-income and minority students navigate barriers to higher education. It is geared to “redress the systemic inequities” so that students can “pursue all possible pathways to a college education.”

RWU President Ioannis Miaoulis said the new program is “part of the school’s mission and core values to advance educational equity for all students.” He is hopeful that the partnership will help many college hopefuls pursue undergraduate programs at RWU or elsewhere.

Benefits of the Program

Starting this fall, Providence high school students will receive free instruction on college readiness and career path exploration from RWU faculty and students.

The college preparatory academy will open in September. Ninth and tenth-grade students can enroll in the program, which will be offered on weekends at RWU’s Bristol and Providence campuses.

During the program, high school students will get to explore a college campus. They will also have the opportunity to interact with RWU’s admissions office and financial aid teams to learn about the college application process.

In addition, students will take part in RWU’s Intercultural Leadership Ambassador Program, which offers a yearly scholarship of more than $30,000 for four years. It also provides mentorship and academic support for first-generation and low-income students.
