The Shepherd University Foundation has started a new scholarship program to benefit female students studying biology, the school said in a release.
The Files-Lowman Scholarship, established by alumna Melanie Files and her husband Rick Lowman, will support junior or senior female students majoring or minoring in biology.
If a biology student is not eligible, the scholarship award will go to female students majoring or minoring in chemistry or physics.
Brooke Shaffer, a senior biology major from Martinsburg, was the first recipient of the Files-Lowman Scholarship award for the 2019-20 academic year.
“I am so honored to be the first recipient of the Files-Lowman scholarship,” Shaffer said. “As a first-generation college student, it means a lot to me to have my academic achievements recognized. I especially appreciate that this scholarship will support women, as this will help create opportunities for us going into the STEM fields.”
Last week, the college announced the creation of a similar scholarship program to support students pursuing majors in the College of Business. The first Dale and Rozelle Leatherman Memorial Scholarship was awarded to junior business major Tiffany Warnick.
