A year after a Georgia Institute of Technology student was shot dead by a campus police officer, the family has renewed its demand to hold the officer accountable for his actions.

The family has decided to file a lawsuit against the university after it failed to take any action against the officer in the last one year.

21-year-old Scout Schultz was shot dead on September 16 last year, after the officers thought that he was carrying a knife and a gun. While he was carrying a multipurpose tool which included an unexpended knife but no gun was recovered from him.

“My last memory of Scout is probably taking them to Walmart to buy their supplies for the coming school year. It really (was) just the one officer who put a bullet through Scout’s heart,” Scout’s father Bill Schultz told Channel 2.

“They are willing to do some of the public changes with the officers, but of course whenever it comes to writing a check, that’s a totally different ballgame.”

Georgia Bureau of Investigation had found the accused officer Tyler Beck of not having proper crisis intervention training. Since last September, Beck has been placed on administrative leave.
