Stanford University has topped the Reuters’ ranking of the World’s Most Innovative Universities for the fourth consecutive year.
The university has ranked No.1 among universities from around the world for inventing new technologies, advancing science and powering new markets and industries.
“Recent Stanford research highlights include several developments in the field of artificial intelligence, including the next generation of camera systems to guide self-driving cars and simulators that can predict potential drug interactions before new pharmaceuticals are ever tested on humans,” the Reuters report said.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranked No. 2 for the fourth consecutive year, as its researchers filed more patent applications than any other independent university. The school has also created smallest robots, who can sense their environment, doing independent computation and storing data.
“MIT research has fueled some of the most important innovations of the past century, including the development of digital computers and the completion of the Human Genome Project,” the ranking report said.
Harvard University has ranked third on the list for the fourth consecutive year for spending $868 million dollars in sponsored research and for developing acoustophoretic printing, a new printing method that uses sound waves to generate liquid droplets out of fluids.
Eight of the top ten universities are American, one is British, while only one is from Belgium — KU Leuven. In total, 46 American universities made it into the top 100 of the most innovative universities.
The rankings, compiled in partnership with Clarivate Analytics, employs data from patent filings from Derwent Innovation, a flagship patent research platform including research paper citations.
The list has nine universities from Japan and nine from Germany, eight from South Korea, and five each from the United Kingdom, China, and France. It also includes three schools from Switzerland and two each from the Netherlands, Israel, Belgium, and Canada.
No universities from Africa, Oceania, and South America were able to make the list.
