Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will become more accessible and affordable for the state’s middle-income families as the school has announced a new financial aid program.
The program, beginning in the fall of 2019, will benefit the in-state students with annual income less than $61,000. The university will cover the tuition and campus fees of freshmen up to 8 semesters, while transfer students will be covered up to 6 semesters.
“We established Illinois Commitment to ensure that even more high-achieving students in our state have affordable access to the kind of life-changing educational experience you can only find here at Illinois,” Chancellor of the Urbana campus Robert J. Jones said.
He noted that many students who could study at the university never even consider applying because they don’t believe they could afford to attend the Urbana campus.
“As a public university, we must see to it that talented students of all economic backgrounds in the state of Illinois have access to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. With Illinois Commitment, we’re taking a bold and necessary step to simplify the financial-aid concept and open the door to an Illinois education for more families in our state,” Jones added.
The university has assured its students that the new financial aid program will not affect the federal and state aid available to other students studying at the Urbana campus.
