Starting next year, first-time freshmen at the University of Utah will be able to attend college for free, the university announced in a release.
The university launched For Utah Scholarship, a first of a kind in the state, which will cover tuition and fees of freshmen Utah students by combining federal, state and university funds.
During the first two years, the Utah System of Higher Education and Pell Grant funding will cover the college cost, while the final two years will be covered by the For Utah Scholarship and Pell Grant money.
“This program will be a game changer for students throughout the state as it makes a world-class education an accessible option for all,” Steve Robinson, senior associate vice president for Enrollment Management said.
“We call this scholarship ‘For Utah’ because it ensures cost is not a barrier for any qualified student in our state who wants the best degree imaginable.”
The university is expecting to spend approximately $2.5 million annually and raise additional funds from the donors.
To be eligible for the scholarship program, an individual must be a first-time freshmen Utah resident with a high school average GPA of at least 3.2. They must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and subsequent Pell Grant eligibility.
Students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA during the period of enrollment to receive continued support.
