Military veterans in five of Vanderbilt University schools will have access to programming support and financial aid.

The university is establishing the Bass Military Scholars Program after receiving a $25 million donation from the Lee and Ramona Bass Foundation.

Military veterans and officers will able to study and receive support in five of Vanderbilt’s schools: the School of Medicine, the Law School, the School of Nursing. the Owen Graduate School of Management and Peabody College.

“Military veterans know the true meaning of service, of leadership, of community. Those are key values that have long driven the university’s mission. The Bass Military Scholars Program reinforces our and the donor’s commitment to those deeply held principles,” university Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos said.

The scholar’s program will provide six scholarships to veterans annually, starting in 2019-2020 academic year and increase to 40 scholarships when the program is fully endowed.

“This program is specifically designed to maximize the wider Vanderbilt community’s exposure to the important lessons and experiences of military veterans,” said Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Susan R. Wente.

“At the same time, we want Vanderbilt to play an integral role in preparing those who served our country for successful careers in their civilian endeavors.”

The university has named one of the program’s scholarships in the honor of former U.S. Navy officers and alumnus John S. Beasley II.
