Western Governors University is planning to offer scholarships to working adults who want to earn a college degree without disturbing their professional lives.
Under its Back to School Scholarship program, the school will award $800,000 in scholarships to students based on their financial need, willingness to study online, and academic record among other considerations. In this phase, the university will provide financial support to nearly 400 students.
The scholarship, open to more than 60 bachelors and master’s degree programs, is valued at $2,000 per student. It currently offers degree programs in information technology, business, health professions, and teaching.
“The scholarship changed my life,” said Amanda Ogle, a recent WGU scholarship recipient. “It allowed me to get my teaching degree, and inspire my children, current students, and future students to follow their dreams, persevere, and experience the success that comes from determination.”
Applications for the program are accepted through September 30, 2019.
Earlier this year, WGU signed an agreement with Alvin Community College and South Texas College (STC) to “maximize the transferability of coursework and credits.” The college also started a $50,000 scholarship program for students considering obtaining a college degree in 2019.
Last year in November, the university also devoted $750,000 in scholarships for veterans, active-duty military, reservists and military family members to honor their service to the nation.
