Iowa State University (ISU) is mourning the loss of two students found dead after a crew club practice ended in tragedy on Sunday.
The Iowa State Crew Club were training at Little Wall Lake in Hamilton County when their boat capsized. According to an ISU press release, five students were involved in the accident.
Three team members were rescued and taken to the Mary Greeley Medical Center for treatment. The university has not disclosed any names but reported that the students were later discharged from the hospital.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office joined forces with other agencies to conduct a rescue operation to locate the remaining students. A dive team was able to retrieve the body of one student as the search continued to find the last victim.
The body of the fifth student was recovered at 10:45 am on Monday by the Story County Sheriff’s Office Dive team members and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Toyia Younger said that the university is working to “provide answers.” However, for now, the priority is to “comfort and support those students involved in the accident, other members of the Iowa State Crew Club, their families and friends.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the two students we lost on Sunday. During this time of grief, I ask the entire Iowa State community to show compassion and support for one another,” Younger added.
Iowa State will conduct an internal review of policies and procedures related to this incident and any additional information will be disclosed once the investigation is complete.
