The University of Kansas has received a $1.4 million gift to provide scholarships to students demonstrating financial need, the university announced in a release.

The gift, donated by the legacy estate of alumna and retired librarian Martha “Matt” Mueller, who passed in 2018, will create the Mueller Family Fund to support the university’s libraries and to create undergraduate scholarships for students.

“The funds that Matt Mueller has directed to KU Libraries will directly support our mission to transform lives by advancing discovery, innovation and learning,” Kevin L. Smith, dean of libraries, said.

Preference for the scholarship will be given to students from Joplin, Missouri, and Eureka, Kansas.

Mueller earned a bachelor’s degree in education from KU in 1955 and a master’s degree in library science from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1958. She retired in 1994 as a librarian at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

Last month, the university also received a gift of $4.2 million from the legacy estate of Margaret Ann Zimmerman, a retired nurse who died in 2017 to provide scholarships to postdoctoral and full-time doctoral students.
