More than 30 students at the University of Maryland have contracted an adenovirus-associated illness, which caused death of a student last month.
According to the university officials, eight students out of 30 were hospitalized and later discharged.
The latest outbreak comes a week after the university announced its plans to expedite the process of cleaning the dormitories by hiring contractors who will disinfect rooms during the winter break.
According to a FOX 5 DC report, the university informed students about the virus nineteen days after it was first reported on November 1 by 18-year-old freshman Olivia Paregol who later died due to the virus complications.
“Since learning of the first isolated case of Adenovirus on November 1, [UMD] has been working with the state and local health department to track cases and inform their community how seriously to take cold and flu season – especially for anyone with special health circumstances or a weakened immune system,” university spokesperson toldFOX 5 DC.
Last week, the Central Connecticut State University reported a confirmed case of bacterial meningitis. Duke University and University of Colorado students were also admitted to a hospital after being diagnosed with it.
