Michigan State University has entered an agreement with a public transportation provider to extend free bus service to its whole campus community.

The agreement signed with Cape Ann Transportation Authority (CATA) will allow all the university students, staff and faculty to access fare-free rides. It amends the current contract that factors in expenses, federal and state support, and rider usage.

With the new contract in place, the fare-free rides will continue for weekday service, including routes 30, 31, 32, 33, 38 and 39; and weekend service on routes 34, 35 and 36.

“We are elated by our new service agreement with Michigan State University,” said CATA CEO Bradley T. Funkhouser. “Given our 20-year partnership with MSU, in which CATA has served as its primary public-transportation service provider, we are deeply honored by the university’s confidence in us.”

The transportation provider will make service adjustments from semester to semester as deemed necessary.

Earlier this year, Ford Motor Company Fund awarded $25,000 to the Sustainable Spartans student group that will be spent on establishing the new solar-powered lighting. It will help in improving overall safety and will improve safety and make riders who are waiting for a bus on campus more visible to CATA’s operators.
