The University of Michigan has seen a surge in rape incidents reported throughout the last academic year.
According to its “Annual Report Regarding Institutional Response to Reports of Sexual Harassment,” the school saw 235 cases of sexual misconduct involving faculty, staff, and third parties.
The incidents were reported between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018, which is an increase of 90 reports from 2016. Out of all the reports, the Office for Institutional Equity investigated 26, ordered review in 82 matters, addressed 124 matters, while three matters were addressed by the Human Resources Office
“Of the 26 investigations initiated by OIE since July 1, 2017, 18 were completed at the time this report was issued. These 18 cases represented 19 possible violations because in one case, two possible violations were reported (both sexual harassment and retaliation),” the report reads.
“Corrective action was imposed in 10 matters investigated by OIE this year. Two respondents grieved the corrective action imposed. One grievance is completed and the grievance was denied. The second grievance is still pending.”
To address concerns related to the crimes happening on campus, the university has started Haven Training for Faculty and Staff and Responsibilities at Michigan: Sexual Assault, Intimate Partner Violence, Stalking, and Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment.
The Institutional Equity office also conducted 110 in-person educational programs on sexual misconduct reaching 4,912 members of the University community.
