The Vulcan Materials Company Foundation has pledged $500,000 to support select Historically Black Colleges and Universities throughout the Southeastern region of the country.
The new grant initiative, announced last Wednesday at a meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, will provide students with scholarships and opportunities to intern for Vulcan, the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates. These internships may also lead to full-time employment once participants graduate from college.
“Historically Black Colleges and Universities have been leadership laboratories in America for more than 150 years and their value as part of the fabric of American life has never been more important,” Tom Hill, Vulcan Materials Company chairman and CEO, said.
Hill added that the initiative will create opportunities for young leaders and promote a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
“This is vitally important to us, as is our commitment to superior safety and environmental performance and to supplying essential infrastructure materials used throughout the U.S. economy,” he said.
Under the initiative, students who are nominated by their colleges will also have the opportunity to work on designing and suggesting ways to bring improvement into innovation and infrastructure. The selected colleges will see enhanced facility spaces with more tech-friendly study halls on their campuses as well.
