The Murray State University is the safest school in the nation, according to the National Campus Safety Summit.

The summit awarded the Murray State Police Department and Center for Adult and Regional Education for taking various safety initiatives to ensure security on campus.

According to Murray Ledger & Times, in 2017, both departments collaborated to develop a centralized communications calendar and procedural plans for outsiders visiting the campus for various camps and programs.

“This recognition is particularly meaningful in that it recognizes our continued commitment towards campus safety, as well as the collaboration between two departments, for the betterment of Murray State University,” university interim president Bob Jackson said.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston ranked second for initiating various measures to increase campus security in 2017, while Virginia Commonwealth University ranked third out of top 25 colleges.

The summit ranks colleges on various factors, including development of major programs, procedure, policies, method or approach to improving campus safety.

The Murray State and other runner-ups will be awarded at the National Campus Safety Summit at Las Vegas, Nevada, in February next year.
