A Rice University professor has won the 2019 Spiers Memorial Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry for her contributions to nanoscience.

Naomi Halas, who is Rice’s Stanley C. Moore Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and professor of chemistry, bioengineering, physics and astronomy, and materials science and nanoengineering, will be honored at the society’s Faraday Discussion meeting in February.

The society is honoring Halas for her “pioneering research at the intersection of optics and nanoscience and the demonstration of optical property manipulation by nanoparticle geometry.”

The Spiers Memorial Award, established in the memory of Faraday Society co-founder Frederick Spiers in 1928, includes a medal, a certificate and a prize of $2,565.

Halas has authored more than 300 refereed publications and is well known for her study of light-activated nanoparticles and their possible uses. For her research she was elected to both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering.
