While the novel coronavirus continues to impact the lives of many people around the world, college students are anxiously waiting to hear about any refunds they will receive for the rest of the spring semester.
Since the majority of college campuses transferred the rest of their semester online, students are hoping for a refund for their dorm fees, parking passes, and on-campus fees. With students being told to stay away from campus, they are continuing to pay for resources that they are unable to use.
As a senior at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills, I was thrilled to hear that our spring semester would officially be online for the remainder of the semester. Being online meant I could spend more time with my family and focus on my academics in a peaceful space. But, as days continued to pass, I realized that many students who attend my university (including myself) paid for a full semester of resources that we are now unable to use.
As the Coronavirus continues to spread globally, working students are being laid off without financial support from their employers. With this thought in mind, I created a petition on change.org that encourages the dean and president of Cal State Dominguez Hills to refund students their money in order to support themselves during this epidemic.
After creating the petition, CSUDH students, friends, and family managed to get 2,694 signatures in less than a week. Students were passionate about this petition because they invest a lot of their money into their education with confidence that their university will invest that money back into their students. Without school being in session physically, students are hoping that their university does the right thing and distributes refunds.
“I appreciate the fast-paced decision that Dominguez Hills made to adjust accordingly to the situation,” said Angel Salvador, a student at Dominguez Hills.
However, I’m a low- income student who lives paycheck to paycheck, and because of this situation, I’m also in danger of losing my job. It would really benefit myself and a lot of my college colleagues to have our refunds back for the services we paid for in this time of crisis.”
With reimbursements, students will be able to support themselves and their families during this time of need.
