Illinois State U. Makes History with All-Female Student Government

-

For the first time in Illinois State University’s history, its Student Government Association (SGA) will have an all-female executive body, the school said in a release.

The elections, which were held from April 1 to April 3, elected Samiat Solebo as the school’s student body president, Jada Turner as vice president, and Hannah Woody as the body’s chief of staff. Each member will serve one year in office.

The association is composed of a 20-member Senate and an executive branch for student needs. It also initiates programs and services to enhance student life.

“My main goal is to keep ISU heading in the right direction,” Solebo said. “I want more transparency between the faculty and the student body so that everyone is on the same page.”

All three executive members plan to ensure transparency between faculty and student body, to make the campus more diverse and inclusive, and to establish a new multicultural center.

“The multicultural center is something that ISU needs, and there are now steps being taken to create one,” Solebo added. “It’s good to see that minority students are getting more of a voice on campus.”

Turner said she wants to ensure that minority students feel welcomed on the school’s campus.

“One of my main goals is to inspire new students and make them feel comfortable at ISU,” Turner said. “I want to be a role model, especially for minority students. I want to show them that if I can do it, so can they.”

Woody also plans to expand the body’s marketing presence so more people are aware of what the student government does.
