California University Professor Wins 2018 Lakatos Award

-

A University of California San Diego professor has been awarded the 2018 Lakatos Award for making contributions to the philosophy of science.

Craig Callender, who is the professor of philosophy at the university and the president of the Philosophy of Time Society, won the award for the book “What Makes Time Special?” The book, published in 2017, addresses the conflict between the static time of fundamental physics and our instinctive model of time as flowing.

The award, funded by Latsis Foundation, is administered by an international management committee after a detailed report on shortlisted books is made by a panel of selectors.

As a part of the award, Callender will travel to the London School of Economics and Political Science to give a lecture on his research.

“I hope the award will draw attention to the need for more interdisciplinary research on time. Because my career started at the London School of Economics, I’m especially delighted to receive this award,” Callender said.

The Lakatos Award selection committee has termed his book as a “compulsory” read which breaks new grounds by integrating the fields of psychology, physics, and metaphysics.
