A former University of Missouri student has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with lifetime supervision for raping a university student.
21-year-old Austin Campbell was sentenced on Thursday for raping a woman who was sleeping in her dorm room in January 2016.
According to Columbia Tribune, Boone County judge Jeff Harris denied the motion for a retrial, following which a jury of eight men and two women found Campbell guilty of first-degree rape.
“I think he did that because he knew she’d been drinking. He hoped she would not wake up. And he thought if she did wake up, no one would believe her,” Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jessica Caldera told ABC 17 News.
“But we were able to convince a jury beyond all reasonable doubt that he did this, that he was guilty of rape in the first degree.”
During the trial in August, the victim alleged Campbell of rape when she was asleep in her dorm room, while he has been claiming that sex was consensual.
She had reported the incident to the University of Missouri Police Department the next day.
