Nine Colleges Receive Seal of Excelencia for Serving Latino Students

-

Nine colleges and universities across the nation recently received Excelencia in Education’s Seal of Excelencia certification for serving Latino students.

The institutions enrolled and graduated about 5 percent of all Latino students and directly contributed to helping meet the organization’s national degree completion goals.

Founded in 2004, Excelencia in Education aims to accelerate Latino student success in higher education. The organization’s Seal of Excelencia certification provides independent verification of institutions that serve Latino students by intentionally aligning data, practice, and leadership.

“At Excelencia, we know that institutions and communities that intentionally measure their postsecondary Latino student success and use evidence-based practices both serve these students well and serve as catalysts for substantive, positive change in public policy,” Sarita Brown, president of Excelencia in Education, said.

“Through the Seal certification process, we provide a platform for colleges and universities to reflect on their current impact, practices, and policies and implement new and better ones that respond to Latino students’ realities. Ultimately this serves all students.”

The institutions that made it into the inaugural cohort, earning certifications, are Arizona State University,
Austin Community College, California State University Channel Islands, El Paso Community College, Florida International University,
Grand Valley State University, South Texas College, the
University of Arizona, and the
University of Texas El Paso.
