Nearly Half of Younger STEM Talent Interested in Oil, Gas Industry Jobs

-

Nearly half of Millennial and Generation Z STEM talent are interested in pursuing a career in the oil and gas industry, a new global survey by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has found.

The Workforce of the Future report, which surveyed STEM students and young professionals aged 15 to 35 across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, found that 44 percent of respondents were interested in working within the oil and gas industries.

However, this number pales in comparison to the 77 percent of respondents who were interested in working in technology, 58 percent interested in working in life sciences and pharmaceuticals, and 57 percent interested in working in healthcare.

Commissioned by ADNOC to gauge future employment trends within the oil and gas industry, especially as the industry looks to attract more STEM talent, the survey found that 72 percent of surveyed teens and adults believe that new technologies will have an impact on oil and gas.

“The oil and gas industry should position itself at the cutting-edge of technology and showcase how breakthrough innovation is vital to every aspect of our business – across the upstream and downstream value chain,” Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State and ADNOC Group CEO, said.

“As we enter the 4th Industrial Age, we need to come together as an industry and – with our technology industry partners – better highlight the exciting opportunities our dynamic industry offers to young talent with strong technology skills,” he added.

More specifically, when asked what the biggest attractions about working in the oil and gas industry were, 39 percent said it pays well, 38 percent cited the importance of the industry for their country’s economy and development, while another 26 percent said it’s because the industry is technology-driven.
