Three Harvard University faculty members have won the Allen Distinguished Investigator award for their contributions to the field of neuroimmunology, cancer, and developmental biology.
Chenghua Gu, a neurobiologist, Marc Kirschner, a systems biologist, and cancer researcher David Weinstock from Harvard Medical School received the award for pioneering work in their respective fields. Each researcher will receive $1.5 million for their projects over a period of next three years.
Professor Gu received the award for studying the brain vasculature in relation to neuroimmunology, Kirschner – for his mold-breaking approaches to studying how cells divide, live and die, while Weinstock received the award for his study on molecular origins of cancer and how cells repair their damaged DNA.
The award, set up by Allen Institute in 2010, provides grants to researchers whose early-stage research is less likely to receive the grant from the traditional sources.
