MIT’s Kresge Auditorium Named Most Beautiful Theater in Country

-

When it comes to choosing a college with a beautiful performance theater, making a choice often becomes difficult among thousands of colleges across the nation.

A college ranking website, College Consensus, has made the job easier by ranking colleges known for their luxurious and state-of-the-art theaters.

The website has named Kresge Auditorium on MIT’s campus, No. 1 for its renowned collections of Mid Century Modern Art, with a college consensus score of 85.7 and student consensus score of 82.2.

“The two buildings are divided by a green, which is called the ‘Kresge Oval.’ The green was created with the intention of being a site for civic events,” the Consensus review said.

“The Auditorium itself is the home to a concert hall that can accommodate over 1200 people and a small theater that seats 204. One of the things that make its structure so spectacular is the sheer glass curtain walls.”

Yale Repertory Theater at the Yale University ranked second for its “distinct architectural style of Gothic Revival.” It received a college consensus score of 84 and students consensus score of 85.4.

The Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts at Brown University, the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts at Cornell Univerity, and the Marjorie Walter Goodhart Theater at Bryn Mawr College also made it into the top five of the colleges with the most beautiful theaters.

“Prioritizing the wow factor of the art venue on campus goes far in encouraging people to show up,” Consensus writers said in a release. “The value of a theater has many facets; For older spaces, the painstaking work it takes to preserve the historical significance of a building cannot be overstated.”

The ranking website compiled the list after looking at the top theater colleges and the spaces they perform their craft.
