Ohio-based University of Mount Union is establishing a grant that will make college affordable for all the students who lack financial means to pay for college, the school announced on Thursday.
The university has launched Mount Union Pell Opportunity Grant that will cover the difference between tuition costs and the amount a family can pay with their income. Students who receive Pell Grant or federal support through loan programs will also have their pending tuition and technology fee covered under the grant.
Each year university awards $30.7 million in grants and scholarships each year through its various scholarship and financial aid program.
“With the total number of Pell Grant recipients increasing by seven percent nationally over the past decade and the high number of Pell-eligible students that the University currently serves,” said Lindajean Heller Western, vice president for enrollment management.
“It is essential for Mount Union to help lift the burden of debt carried by our most financially challenged students through the establishment of this grant.”
Starting next academic year, both in-state and out of state students with an annual household income of $55,000 or less with a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher will be eligible to apply for the program. They must also file the Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA).
