Two University of Michigan Professors Elected to NAM

National Academy of Medicine (NAM) has conferred two University of Michigan professors with membership of the academy often considered as one of the highest health and medicine honor.

George Mashour and Lori J. Pierce, who are experts in anesthesiology and radiation oncology at the university, were recognized by the academy for making advancements in the field of public health, healthcare and medical sciences.

The two professors are part of the newly elected 85-member team announced by the academy on Monday.

“This distinguished and diverse class of new members is a truly remarkable set of scholars and leaders whose impressive work has advanced science, improved health, and made the world a better place for everyone,” academy President Victor J. Dzau said.

“Their expertise in science, medicine, health, and policy in the U.S. and around the globe will help our organization address today’s most pressing health challenges and inform the future of health and healthcare. It is my privilege to welcome these esteemed individuals to the National Academy of Medicine.”

Appointed as director of the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research in October 2015, Mashour is a renowned expert on sleep, anesthetic mechanisms and consciousness.

While Pierce who is Director of the Michigan Radiation Oncology Quality Consortium (MROQC) is well known for her research on multi-modality treatment of breast cancer especially a BRCA1/2 breast cancer susceptibility gene with the use of radiotherapy.
