Another complaint about sexual assault has forced a Washington State University assistant athletic director to put down his papers.
Jason Gesser, who was also a star quarterback for the Washington State, resigned from his post on Tuesday, a day after he was placed on a home assignment by the university.
Last week, The Daily Evergreen, a student-run newspaper, reported numerous allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct against Gesser, after examining hundreds of pages of public records.
The newspaper alleged him of making advances on co-workers and student interns and using university funds for a non-official purpose.
“This is new information and a different set of events than previously reported,” Kimberly Anderson, Executive Director of the Office for Equal Opportunity, said in a statement.
“In accordance with standard WSU practice and in consultation with relevant University officials, Mr. Gesser was placed on home assignment pending a full investigation of the allegations.”
Following the university action, Gesser submitted his resignation letter on Tuesday afternoon.
“I am deeply saddened that recent circumstances in my private life have created a distraction for the department and university. While I certainly never intended to hurt anyone, I believe it is best for all involved for me to move on,” Gesser said in a statement.
“To the young woman that I made feel uncomfortable, I respectfully have a different recollection of the situation you’ve described but acknowledge that I should never have been in the situation in the first place, and I apologize. I truly never meant to cause you harm,” he added.
While the university has said that its Office for Equal Opportunity will continue the investigation into the allegations.
