Student Sues Southern Illinois University for Sexual Assault

-

Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville is in trouble over the handling of a rape case reported by a student.

Bailey Reed, an undergraduate student, who accused a fellow student of rape in October 2017 is suing the university for bungling the complaint against the accused.

Reed has accused university Chancellor Randall Pembrook of using his authority to reject the findings of campus Sexual Harassment Panel that found the alleged guilty of breaking university rules.

She then even approached the board of trustees to reverse the decision made by Pembrook, which even didn’t work forcing her to sue the university in the court.

“SIUE had many opportunities to provide a fair and non-discriminatory process in this case. It chose instead to violate a student’s rights. SIUE stole Reed’s ability to have an education free from sexual harassment and gender discrimination,” Reed’s attorney Nicole Gorovsky told River Front Times.

Reed in her lawsuit has further accused the university of Title IX violations and not having trained staff to handle cases of sexual violence. Meanwhile, the university didn’t issue any statement on the latest development, saying it didn’t have the time to review the complaint.
