The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has received an award for INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine’s 2020 Inspiring Programs in STEM.
The university received the prize for their “Latinas Gaining Access to Networks for Advancement in Science (L@s GANAS),” an initiative to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus.
“We are honored that UIC’s commitment to educating a more diverse generation of future STEM leaders has been recognized,” Amalia Pallares, associate chancellor and vice provost for diversity at UIC, said in an official statement.
L@s GANAS program focuses on increasing the number of Latino students with degrees in the STEM fields. The program keeps key priorities like student access, inclusive teaching and mentoring, equality, and inclusion in mind.
“Through the program, L@s GANAS Fellows recognize the relevancy of their unique backgrounds and experiences, and incorporate those elements into their academic careers making them better scientists,” said Veronica Arreola, L@s GANAS program director in an official statement.
Diversity-Focused Publication
The INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine is the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in US higher education. The Inspiring Programs in STEM Award honors colleges and universities that encourage women and students from underrepresented sections to enter the STEM fields.
UIC will be featured among the 49 other recipients in the September 2020 issue.
Each recipient receives an award certificate and also gets profiled in the September 2020 STEM Disciplines issue of the magazine.
