University of Maryland Fires Two Athletic Trainers Over McNair’s Death

-

Days after parting ways with head football coach DJ Durkin, the University of Maryland fired two more athletic trainers whose name cropped during investigations into Jordan McNair death.

According to The Washington Post report, director of athletic training Steve Nordwall and head athletic trainer Wes Robinson were fired on Wednesday, three months after being placed on administrative leave.

“The trainers that were previously on administrative leave are no longer employed at the university,” a university spokeswoman told the Post.

Investigations into the conduct of trainers had found that they didn’t follow proper protocols leading to the death of 19-year-old football player.

In June, McNair collapsed after attending a football workout session conducted by Durkin in late May, which lead to his death.

Durkin, along with two athletic trainers, were placed on paid leave later in August, following an ESPN report on “toxic culture at Maryland football,” which brought out disturbing methods used to coach football players primarily relying on fear, intimidation, humiliation, verbal abuse and using food punitively.

Last week, the Maryland Board of Regents recommended the return of all the three employees back to work despite the accusations, but the decision was met with a stiff resistance from parents and student groups, who have been calling for their suspension.
