California-based Coastline College is extending immediate scholarship funding to its Coast Guard students impacted by the current government shutdown.
The college announced that it will cover the tuition fees of affected students that registered for the spring term after the Coast Guard announced it was suspending its Tuition Assistance (TA) program.
The Coast Guard is the only branch of the armed services which is part of the Department of Homeland Security and is not being paid during the shutdown. All other branches of the armed sources fall under the Department of Defense, which continues to receive government funding.
“Coastline College has a renowned reputation for supporting active-duty Servicemembers and Veterans, and I am appreciative our Foundation has made funding available to our students serving in the Coast Guard,” President of Coastline College, Dr. Loretta Adrian said.
Chosen as the Best for Vets College by the Military Times, Coastline is known for developing PocketEd, a program designed for members of the U.S. Coast Guard deployed on cutters.
“Coastline College enrolls hundreds of active duty Coast Guard members and is committed to helping each member reach their educational goal without barriers,” the release states. “Coastline’s Military Program has been a top community college choice for students from the Coast Guard for more than three decades.”
As the shutdown extends into its fifth week, various colleges around the country are taking initiatives to assist impacted students. Thomas Edison State University is also covering tuition for its students in the Coast Guard who haven’t been getting their typical tuition assistance.
