The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has unveiled its new $40.4 million athletic training facility, built to further promote the success of the school’s student-athletes.
Named the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence (RACE), the new facility was funded by donations, support from the City of San Antonio, and funds from the Roadrunner Foundation. Roughly 10.8 acres of land was utilized for the multimillion-dollar project.
According to UTSA, the athletics center will help the school recruit and retain competitive student-athletes, coaches, and staff from throughout the country. The school also said the RACE will provide sports enthusiasts with the best environment to help them achieve their full potential.
“Great universities have exceptional academic, research, and athletics enterprises. The addition of RACE will further propel UTSA to national recognition while advancing our success as Division I competitors in Conference USA and generating a great sense of pride for San Antonio,” UTSA President Taylor Eighmy said in a press release, adding that the generosity of donors helmed the project towards its success.
The nearly 95,000 square-foot facility features academic spaces, strength and conditioning facilities, a sports medicine center, meeting rooms, locker rooms, offices for staff and coaches, an equipment room, and practice fields.
We want to extend our deepest appreciation to Gene Dawson and the Roadrunner Foundation Board, @LisaUTSA, @COSAGOV, @BexarCounty and the generosity of so many donors who helped bring RACE to life.#UTSA #StudentSuccess @UTSAAthletics @PresidentEighmy @Ron_Nirenberg @Judge_wolff pic.twitter.com/TyEWA2CFco

‘Long-Lasting Impact’
UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, Lisa Campos, explained that recent developments at the university reflect its commitment to student success, whether in academics, sports, or other areas and that the new facility will have a “long-lasting impact.”
Eighmy also expressed that the school’s athletics program is an integral part of the college experience for students. She said the unveiling of the new facility is “foundational” for the future of UTSA athletics.
“We look forward to building on this momentum and seizing the opportunities that lie ahead,” she remarked.
After the construction of RACE, the university said it is shifting its focus to another athletics project: the installation of a covered pavilion and other facilities at the UTSA Park West Campus.
